This week it's the start of Fairtrade Fortnight. For 2019, the campaign is focusing on the women who grow the cocoa for the chocolate that we all love so much. The key message is #SheDeserves £1.86 per day to achieve a living income. Typically, a cocoa farmer in Cote d'Ivoire lives on around 74p a day...less than half what they need to escape a daily life of poverty. For women, the situation can be even more chronic since they often combine their work with household chores and looking after the family, not to mention the fact that they have fewer rights than men. A living income of £1.86 would provide enough money to live a simple yet dignified life, paying for essentials such as clothing, medicine and school.
There are lots of ways to support this initiative, including signing a petition, promoting the campaign on social media, fundraising and - of course - choosing Fairtrade chocolate.
